Imagine something happened and you would like to say: O, shit!
Well, shit happens. But sometimes, something beyond that couldoccur before you even see it coming. For the rail yard worker Dewey, this is a badday. It hasn’t started yet until he jumped out of the cab for the trackswitcher. The controller accidentally slipped to the full throttle position andthe air brake hose were not even connected.
TheAWVR (Allegheny and West Virginia Railroad) “777” freight train rolling on the southbound track, unmanned, like a beast with the temper. It rushing to a significant populated town in Stanton carrying a whole bunch of cars, and two train tanks contained thousands gallons of molten phenol.
Itseems no one and nothing could possibly stop it. And here comes the badnews—the train was running at 70 to 80 miles per hour when it reaches the elevated curve in Stanton. Once the train into that curve, it will derail andcauses a never-before-seen disaster.
Thestory was based on the actual unmanned train incident of CSX 8888 (aka. “CrazyEight”) in Ohio in 2001. The filmmakers adapt the incident and put more dramatic details into the movie. This 2010 released film is really non-stopaction thriller.
Director Tony Scott (Enemy of the States, The Taking Of Palem 1 2 3) delivered yet another high speed, breath-taking movie. The most things I like about Tony’s movie,especially this one and 123 is that he really caught the life of everyday person, also integrate the blockbuster element. Most important is, I am a hugefan of railway and subway, so these two films feeds me well. The giant metal locomotive moving slowly along the track, then the runaway train picking up speed, rolling wheels unstoppable, I can feel the power of the machine andseems those engines has a life.
With his unique cinematography style and sharp cutting method, the audience arechained to their chairs and experienced a roller coaster ride with train “777”.Film crew puts a lot of efforts on locations, production design and also,especially the camera movement. Lots of wide shot and long ranges shot involved give the film a documentary look. The special lenses that allowedcinematographer zoom in to 2 meters from almost half a mile away. Besides camera trucks, Porsche Cayenee pursuit system with camera crane, Unstoppable also integrate helicopter shots. We are not talking about one single chopper with steady cam,but more than three camera choppers performing sky ballet. Those shots give the movie a 3 dimensional look, and successfully elevated the visual experience.
Coming to the Blu-ray, yet another excellent presentation from FOX, delivers a richcolored and detailed image with terrific grey level. As we found in Tony’s previous projects, a heavy grain and high contract of picture becomes theiconic characteristic. This disc are faithfully restored the image with a nicestructured 2.35:1 widescreen. The fresh red of the locomotive represent thenature of “the Beast”, and the vividly green of the plant really make theaudience believe that they are traveling around the woods and suburb area insouth PA. No DNR can be found in the picture, the grain stays in a reasonab lelevel, just enough to present the texture of the image.
Talking about the sound, which is another main character of this Blu-ray disc, isequally encouraging. First of all, the detail of all the sounds in the moviesuch as trains, helicopters, wind blowing through the woods, siren sounds etc.are well balanced and easily recognizable. The mixing are excellent so is theediting. The sound connected tightly and neatly, not a second of distractionsound I can hear in this DTS-HD Master Audio. The dialog is also crystal clearwhile other sound effects are running into your ears.
The supplements are not plenty but informative. Documentaries explained how thosehigh-speed rail track scenes were made, and you can see how inventive the production design is and how dangerous the stunts can be. For the fan of thismovie, like me, this is more than I expected.
One more thing, this US version of Blu-ray comes with a Digital Copy that is quiteuseful for those iPad and iPod owners and iTunes users. What’s more, this product contains a Chinese subtitle for the movie dialog and the supplements. Ibelieve that this Blu-ray version of action & speed packed thriller can bea nice choice for the movie lovers in China.
